Getting Started

WatchTower is currently in a proof of concept stage, dubbed version 1.0. Version 1.0 comes with some basic functionality and datasets, however, is fully functional and can be used to tailor the amount of extremism you see on Twitter.

Authenticate With Twitter

Once you’ve visited WatchTower (see link above), scroll down to the bottom of the page and select the button labelled ‘Login With Twitter’. Once you’ve done this you’ll be taken to Twitter and asked to verify yourself before finally being taken back to the WatchTower webpage.

Customise Your Thresholds

This stage is optional, however, WatchTower 1.0 allows for you to customize what threshold tolerance you use to block users. This value defines how confident WatchTower is that a user it’s blocking posts extremist content. i.e. a higher value is more confident and a lower value is less confident.

Run WatchTower

You’re all sorted. Now all you need to do is scroll down to the bottom of the website and select run. This may take some time as WatchTower will be going through all users in it’s database to identify the users that fall into the threshold you’ve defined and block them.

WatchTower doesn’t save user sessions so ensure to revisit WatchTower periodically to make sure you’re up to date.
